I work with both women and men - some come to erase chronic pain and stress, while others are hoping to improve their athletic performance. Everyone in todays modern world would benefit from some SI work especially with our sedentary lives and reliance on our screens.
My clinic is an inclusive space and I have been lucky to work with all demographics inclusive of athletes, yogis, pilates instructors, dancers, office workers, grandparents and kids alike; as you can imagine all can benefit from improved structural alignment.
Clients get great results when they are open to being involved and in truly working together - and not just relying on being 'fixed' by someone.
Fascia is the physical and emotional net for your brain and body and acts as a trauma store house for the body, we hold our strain and injuries inside our fascia.
For every thought, emotion or behaviour, there is a correlated response of the body. Each body has it's own unique response to thoughts and emotions. As a human race, we represent walking, moving impressions of joy & sorrow, exhilaration and fear, anger, compassion and love.
For those of us who are scientifically minded, this makes sense. If we look into the world of eastern and alternative medicine, they've been working with fascia and emotions for hundreds of years. The foundation of yoga asana is literally releasing and evolving emotion through physical movement of fascia.
A SI session is typically 90 minutes. Sessions are goal based rather than time based. You can expect your session to fit approximately with this timing, but our priority will be to work appropriately with the theme of your session rather than to follow the clock.
At your initial session we will go through your client information form which you will receive upon booking. This includes collecting your history of injuries and things that relate to your job and lifestyle as well as current concerns that you may have. The more you give me the better we achieve the outcomes you are here for.
Most of your session is spent working on the table, but initially, we will talk and I will need to make some observations of your standing posture.
We will do a body reading so the session will be tailored specifically to your posture and history.
Unlike massage, the client participates in the therapy.
Periodically during the session, I may have you stand, walk, or sit, moving your body in gravity, and ask you to notice any new sensations or perceptions. This will facilitate your process of integration through movement, and it will also allow me to monitor and fine-tune the progress of the work.
Movement is an important part of Structural Integration - from a kinesthetic and neuromuscular perspective, much can transpire in those first few moments of standing and walking. Taking time to notice what is different can be like hitting the save button. As the body-mind registers each increment of intermediate change, your structure begins to make a significant postural shift, and you expand your repertoire of movement.
Every session includes neck and back work, addresses specific areas of the body and concludes with education for daily life.
Allow enough time after your appointment so that you don’t have to rush to your next activity. It is great to have enough time for a three to five minute walk before you get back in your car.
The work is done in full-coverage underwear or minimal clothing to your comfort level.
Women may wear regular underwear, a two-piece bathing suit or a bra (regular bra, preferably a bralette; not a sports bra with a racer T back)
For men, athletic shorts or regular underwear are acceptable.
Please avoid using colognes, perfumes or scented lotions & essential oils prior to your appointment.
Sessions is ideally once a week, fortnightly, depending on your personal goals and needs.
The sensations you will feel will be similar to a strong stretch. Work will be done to reach a level of change within the client respecting the boundaries of their nervous system. The work will proceed at the clients pace with a lot of feedback taken into consideration. Sensations can vary from a pleasurable release to discomfort. Any discomfort on the table is worth the trade to alleviate chronic pain or increased function in daily life.
No, not at all. Come in for one session and see how you respond to the work. Most people see results by session 3 or 4 and this is the natural place to evaluate whether you would like to continue. If you do decide to proceed, it works best to complete the rest of the series within 6 months.
The pain and discomfort you've experienced over a long period of time is not going to change overnight so I ask my clients to trust the process as SI is a progressive protocol in which each session builds on the next.
